Caraway carvi
Considered a biennial in Alberta as we do not have a long enough growing season for it to produce seed first year. All parts of the plant are edible, young leaves can be used in salads, the roots can be treated like carrots and of course the seeds are used in baking.

Myosotis sylvatica - blue
Soft blue blooms that start in May - June. Give it a trim after blooms are spent and it will reward you with more in the fall. A vigorous self sower, but a welcome one in my opinion. Pull out where you don't want it to grow.

Myosotis sylvatica - pink
Same as the blue, only pink. Forget me nots are one of my favorite flowers in the garden. A vigorous self sower, but a welcome one in my opinion. Pull out where you don't want it to grow.

Oenothera biennis
This is a favorite in the garden. It can be invasive, but doesn't seem to be too bad in Zone 3. It may be because the deer tend to get to it first. Wonderful lemony scent.

Oenothera biennis - WC
We found this in the wild this year. It does not have the sweet lemon scent that the other Oenothera has. Otherwise they appear identical. I will not grow this one in the gardens as I would hate to lose the sweetly scented one.

Onopordum acanthium
Scotch Thistle - do not purchase unless you promise to grow responsibly! What a magnificant plant. Massive grey green fuzzy leaves. Would make a fantastic hedge. First year will put out a rosette of leaves, growing to about 2 feet. Second year is when you'll get the magnificent growth and those incredible tennis ball size blooms.

Onopordum algenense
I have a thing for prickly, thistley plants, can you tell? Eventually I will track down all of the Onopordum and grow them in the gardens. A real pain to gather seed from, really a pain, the sharp points penetrate just about any glove, but worth it in my opinion. Gold finches love them and it's a real treat to be able to attract these pretty little birds to the garden.

Verbascum thapsus - Common Mullein
A biennial or short lived perennial. Soft fuzzy gray green leaves form a rosette the first year, and sometimes blooms, second year blooms for sure. Beautiful yellow flowers cover the single stem.
