In our climate this is an indoor plant for the winter. It can be grown outside during the summer after all danger of frost is past. Can be grown directly in the ground or kept in a pot year round. Makes a great houseplant as well.

Albuca shawii
Albuca shawii is a native of South Africa. The leaves are narrow and covered with short sticky hairs. Flowers are few, approximately 15 mm, yellow (with green stripes), nodding and scented. Blooming time is September to February in habitat. The species is summer growing, and winter dormant. Albuca love it on our back deck in the summer, it goes out as soon as all danger of frost is past. Use a well draining bulb mix for your medium.

This pretty little allium has yet to be identified but I didn't want to exclude it from this years list. It has strap like foliage which dies back before the blooms are spent. The flowers are a soft mauve, very delicate in appearance.

These can be a bit weedy from all the bulbils formed at the base of the stalk but the more the merrier. I love the blue on this allium and so do the bees. One can often see the bees sunning themselves as they perch upon the flowers.

Allium senescens
Seed is limited. It's not so much the bloom but the foliage that I'm drawn to. Strap like, blue-ish green, forming a small mound. Very pretty. I'm determined to find plants that will do well under drought conditions under the white spruce that dominates the front yard. Allium senescens is proving to be one tough plant. It is flourishing and appears to be in a happy spot.

Lilium philadelphicum - Western Wood Lily
Wow, these are simply stunning. In full bloom mid-July. It is amazing to see these growing at the tree edge along the highways in Central Alberta. Sometimes they creep down into the ditches but they don't last long there, ditches usually get mowed twice per year. Can be a challenge to establish in your garden but worth the effort.

Lilium pumilum
Will bloom second year from seed. Rich deep orange nodding blooms, sturdy stocks that don't require staking. Will increase steadily. I can not think of a single downside to filling ones garden with this beauty. I believe it is deer proof as well, don't take that as gospel though. Excellent in the rock garden.
