Aconitum uncinatum
This is one of my favorite monkshood. It is a twining plant and prefers to scramble through a plant or obelisk. I had attempted to bring along my yellow rose bush when I moved to Red Deer, it did not survive however. The dead branches make a perfect support for this aconitum. I have read online that this plant is only hardy to zone 6, I assure you it is quite hardy in zone 3 and possibly even zone 2. It grew well in Okotoks and it grows great here in Red Deer. It is not in a protected spot either, in fact quite the opposite.

I did not manage to get a good picture of the flower itself which resembled a pink granny bonnet type, but what was really outstanding on this particular aquilegia was the foliage. A wonderful light green with purple blotches or spots on the leafs. Simply outstanding just for the foliage.

This particular columbine grows in almost full shade with about 1 hour of late evening sun. It is a massive plant and at it's peak was bending over from the weight of the flowers. Codonopsis clematidea
I started this seed in 2005, it grew fine and probably would have bloomed in 2008 but then I dug it up and moved it to Red Deer. Finally, this year, it has bloomed. I thought I had lost it to a large dog that was determined to dig holes in the yard, but it bounced back quickly and was covered in delicate flowers. Well worth the effort! Also, everything I've read indicates that this is not a hardy plant. It is quite hardy to Zone 3.

Delphinium glaucum
Finding this seed up past Rocky Mountain House was one of those 'Stop the Truck' moments. Seeing a favorite plant growing in its natural habitat is so rewarding. We went back to that area on several occasions to ensure that we were able to collect the seed at its prime. The last trip up we were met with clear cut forest (see the blog for that trip). We did manage to find enough seed to offer, plus spread some through the ditches where it had been growing. Let's hope it takes hold again up there for future generations.

Delphinium grandiflorum
This seed is from Delphinium 'Summer Blues', a hybrid. It will not come true from seed but the results we've had so far have been wonderful. Still that same clear blue and the dwarf growth habit. One of the down sides is that because the blooms are so close to ground level they are most often specked with dirt from rain. Plant close to front of the border so that you may fully enjoy this tiny beauty. May be short lived but encourage self sowing.

Gentiana calycosa - Mountain Gentian
There is a ditch up in the Rimbey, AB area that is just a treasure trove of wild flowers. I went back there so many times this past summer, and next year plan on visiting more. I was in awe of the quantity of this gentiana blooming all at once. Unfortunately I was unable to get a really good picture, but there is always next year. We did have a fairly wet year which would probably explain why these did so well. Providing the 'just right' conditions for these may be difficult, moist, on the boggy side but well drained. Worth the effort, as they are beautiful.
